Our History

Adegas Valdavia is situated in Cenlle on the slopes of the Avia valley, facing south-east. This is where the best Ribeiro wines have been produced since Roman times. The history of the wine cellars goes back to the mid-19th century when the cellar and wine press were built. Then in the twentieth century, the cellars were extended by a third of their original capacity and it was in this building that production was carried out, while the wine press fell into disuse as new techniques for pressing grapes were introduced.

In the first half of the twentieth century the cellars were property of Senén Varela, mayor of Ribadavia in the twenties.

At the beginning of the 1950s, Antonio Garcia Soto took over the Cuñas cellars and vineyards. In the 70s control was passed onto his son, Antonio Garcia Carrasco, who was awarded first prize at the IX and XXIII Ribeiro Wine Fair. With the dawn of the new century, there was a drive to reconvert the wine business in an effort to regain the original essence of the local red and white wines and grape varieties such as Treixadura, Albariño, Loureira, Mencía and others.

In 2004 the cellars were refurbished combining respect for the traditional local architecture and reusing the old pressing area, introducing new technology for the finest quality of wine.

The result of all this was the launch of Cuñas Davia in 2005, a white auteur wine made of different varieties which upholds the family tradition of over 50 years while aiming to contribute to the growing prestige of Ribeiro wines.
